2023-2024 Minnesota Hockey Youth Age Classifications

Youth 6U / Mini Mite (Born on or after June 1, 2016)
Youth ages 4 - 6. Youth hockey associations in Minnesota Hockey offer a variety of programs at this age level that focus on teaching the basics of skating and hockey skills. Most programs are very affordable to allow kids to try the sport at a low cost and commitment. Non-checking.

Youth 8U / Mite (Born on or after June 1, 2014)
Primarily youth ages 7-9 but can include players eligible for Mini-Mite/6U. Most associations have multiple levels of Mite Divisions (I, II, III) based upon skill, age and size. There’s usually something for everyone! Non-checking.

Youth 10U / Squirt (June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2014)
Youth ages 9-11. Most associations have multiple levels of Squirt teams (A, B & C) with varying amounts of cost, travel and competitiveness.

Youth 12U / Peewee (June 1, 20010 to May 31, 2012)
Youth ages 11-13. Most associations have multiple levels of Peewee teams (A, B & C) with varying amounts of cost, travel and competitiveness.  Minnesota Hockey hosts Region and State Tournaments at the Peewee B, Peewee A and Peewee AA levels.  Non-checking.

Youth 14U / Bantam (June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2010)
Youth ages 13-15. Most associations have multiple levels of Bantam teams (A, B & C) with varying amounts of cost, travel and competitiveness. Minnesota Hockey hosts Region and State Tournaments for the Bantam B, Bantam A and Bantam AA levels. Checking.

Junior Gold (June 1, 2004 to May 31, 2008)
Young men ages 16, 17 and 18. Most associations now field Junior Gold teams in addition to or as an alternative to high school Junior Varsity.  Minnesota Hockey hosts Region and State Tournaments for Junior Gold. Checking.

Adult Hockey (Born on or before May 31, 2002)
Men over 18. Clubs formed throughout the state for various age and skill levels, plus check and non checking. For more information, contact your local arena or Brandon Koontz, Director of Adult Hockey at (763) 232-3514. 

2023-2024 Minnesota Hockey Girls Youth Age Classifications

8 & Under Girls (Born on or after June 1, 2014)
Young girls ages 8 and under. Offered as an alternative to mites for girls only, many associations within Minnesota Hockey are hosting teams, either as individual associations or combined. Associations who have formed 8 and Under girls only teams have found their registration numbers jump significantly.  

10 & Under Girls (June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2014)
Young girls ages 9 and 10. Offered as an alternative to squirts for girls, most associations within Minnesota Hockey are hosting teams, either as individual associations or combined. All girls hockey is non-checking.

12 & Under (June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2012)
Girls ages 11 and 12. Offered as an alternative to peewee for girls. All girls hockey is non-checking. Minnesota Hockey currently hosts Region and State Tournaments at the 12U A and 12U B levels.

15 & Under (June 1, 2007 to May 31, 2010) 
Girls youth ages 13, 14 and 15. Offered as an alternative to bantam for girls. All girls hockey is non-checking. Minnesota Hockey currently hosts Region and State Tournaments at the 15U A and 15U B levels.

19 & Under (January 1, 2004 to May 31, 2007)
Young women ages 16, 17, 18 and 19. Offered as an alternative to high school or for age eligible girls after high school. All girls' hockey is non-checking.

Women’s Senior A (Born on or before December 31, 2003)
Women 18 and over. Many local clubs have been formed within Minnesota Hockey for women of all ability levels. There are even introductory programs for women interested in trying hockey for the first time. Contact Kendra Verbeten, mnv123@comcast.net, Minnesota Director of Women’s Hockey, for more information.
